The Volume is the board that Jordy continued to adjust and fine tune consistently whilst competing in Europe, and once the news broke of his Olympic qualification, we adjusted this model to suit the Japanese conditions, as Jordy is by far the tallest and heaviest surfer on tour. Basically we flew over to Japan to experience the waves first hand and one thing led to another. Hence the birth of the Volume!
Jordy tried and tested this design extensively when he returned to Durban, tweaking it and adding direct feedback so as to make the changes. This board made a big impact on Matt McGillivray from J.Bay, where he too added vital comments to create a fewer liters for the average weight surfer range that allowed us to achieve a positive dims scale.
Jordy's input is about constantly fine-tuning and testing products at will - even a stock board off the rack should be equally refined, so as to keep up with their pinnacle performance and surfing demands that we face, as he knows what's best for the modern performer.
The good news is that Jordy's design persistence is so overwhelming sometimes, however the subtle changes and tweaks is where it counts, and that will benefit the every-day surfer.
Our Natural bottom curve rocker offers a moderate entry rocker for quicker glide, thus allowing water to flow through the centre mid-rift deep concave with ease and as it passes through the tail section, we get increased lift which generates speed off the bat so to speak! This configuration helps to connect sections more effortlessly and carry speed throughout your turns.
Wider Outlines are becoming more common nowadays, especially in the nose area. This benefits easier paddling into waves, and also helps when tube riding, as you stand further forward, adding "ears" to your outline, which also helps when doing airs or full rotations when landing - an added safety platform for your front foot to cushion on.
Thicker thickness for heavier surfers has become very vital as we hide volume/litres along the stringer centre, and roll the top-deck out towards the rail shoulder. Giving the rail a sexier look to engage the face of the wave better, but still keeping the under-tuck of the rail soft. This adds all round rail forgiveness, but still keeping the rail sensitive.
Distribution and Thickness - the key to a well balanced craft is paying more attention to finer detail - it's about reducing drag wherever one can, in trying to reduce water resistance through manoeuvres. Generating a better water flow throughout will enhance speed - resulting in versatility for a quicker reaction.
Concave and rail rocker-line - basically deeper concave in the right place will give us more lift, and flatter rockers with less tail-lift will help to generate speed quicker. However all these configurations will enhance speed and put looseness under your feet, basically to create better vertical control when doing manoeuvres at will, which will allow for smoother power carves/arcs or off the top hacks. Speed is manoeuvrability on it's own! So the curvier outline and bottom curves are adjusted to suit the surfers location and conditions. Most importantly is to design the model to be responsive and versatile.
